How to Choose Tea as a Gift: A Guide for People Who Don’t Know Tea

· 4 min read

Tea is one of those gifts where the best choice depends heavily on the recipient — but the field of information needed to make that choice is smaller than it first appears. A few simple questions narrow the options considerably, and the remainder is largely about presentation.

This guide is written for people who want to give tea but are not sure where to start.

The First Question: Do They Already Drink Tea?

If the person you are gifting to already drinks tea regularly, the decision is simple: buy them a higher-quality version of what they already drink. Someone who drinks chai every morning will appreciate a premium CTC that brews better than their usual brand. Someone who drinks green tea will notice and value a single-origin whole-leaf version that tastes genuinely different from supermarket bags. The upgrade-within-a-category gift rarely goes wrong.

If you are not sure whether they drink tea, or if they have told you they “don’t really like tea,” consider whether they might like it in a form they have not tried. Many people who dislike the bitter, astringent experience of over-brewed supermarket tea bags have never had well-made whole-leaf tea from a quality garden. It is not the same drink.

Matching Tea to Preference

For someone who is health-conscious or curious about wellness — our green tea range, particularly Premium Green Tea or any of the flavoured varieties. Green tea has a natural lightness and contains the antioxidants and L-theanine that most health-motivated tea drinkers are seeking. Our Ginger Tea works well here too.

For someone who finds regular tea too bitter or harsh — this is often the person who has only had tea bags. Any of our whole-leaf varieties will be a revelation, but Green Tea or White Tea specifically are the most approachable starting points. They are gentle, naturally sweet, and have none of the drying bitterness that creates aversion.

For someone who enjoys unusual or interesting drinksBlue Tea (butterfly pea flower) is visually striking — it brews a deep indigo colour that turns pink when lemon is added — and makes an excellent conversation piece. Jasmine Green Tea appeals to people with an interest in fragrance and flavour complexity.

When in doubt: gift a variety set. The person who does not know which tea they prefer needs to taste more than one to find out — and a well-curated selection of three or four varieties is the most useful and interesting tea gift you can give.

On Presentation

Whole-leaf tea looks beautiful. The leaves are varied in size and colour, the texture is interesting, and a clear or semi-transparent packaging that lets the contents be seen does more for the gift than any amount of decorative ribbon on an opaque box. Our packaging is designed with this in mind.

Include a brief note with the gift — even a single sentence — that tells the recipient where the tea is from. “This is from a single garden in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya — no middlemen, grown and processed on the same estate” is the kind of specific fact that turns a nice gift into a memorable one. The story travels with the tea, and the story is one worth telling.

A Final Note

Tea is one of the few gifts that is genuinely consumed and appreciated over an extended period. A good variety lasts weeks or months depending on how often the recipient drinks it. Every time they brew it, the gift is present again. For the price involved, few gifts maintain this kind of sustained presence. That is a practical reason, separate from all the quality arguments, to consider tea as a serious gifting choice.
